KARL ULRICH SCHNABEL ON RECORD

by Jed Distler

Since he first entered the studio in 1931, Karl Ulrich Schnabel has made relatively few recordings. Yet the artistic quality of his small discographic output is nothing to be modest about. All the works with his father have been reissued on CD, although Schwann no longer lists the 1937 Schubert four hand sessions. Save for the two Schubert CDs with Joan Rowland, all other performances listed here can be found only on out-of-print LPs (or 78s where indicated).

I wish to thank Raymond Donnell and the Gryphon Record Shop in New York City for generously providing research materials, as well as Gregor Benko, Harris Goldsmith, and Karl Ulrich Schnabel for their invaluable contributions.
